Best Network Marketing System - A Simple Way To Target Your Best Prospects

Posted on March 11, 2008 - Filed Under Home Based Business |

My business partner Michael Dlouhy invented the phrase “Be a mentor with a servant’s heart!” Years ago, watching Tom “Big Al” Schreiter up close and personal, Michael saw how Tom did his seminars and how he worked with people. That was the origin of the phrase.

I have found “mentor with a servant’s heart” to be the essence of the best network marketing system. People ask, “What is that?” It means a lot of things. For one, it means “no agenda.” You are there to help people and teach them and guide them with no agenda behind it. If you call them up with the sole intention of getting them into your deal, THAT is an agenda. People feel your self-interest and they resent it.

But a “mentor with a servant’s heart” creates a different kind of relationship, a different kind of bond. You are there to help, and your attitude breaks down the walls and starts building up trust between you and the person you are talking to. I’ve seen it over and over and over.

The person on the other end of the phone can feel it when you talk to them with absolutely no agenda. THAT is the mentor with a servant’s heart.

When You Put Yourself Out To People, YOU Are The Message!

That person you’re putting yourself out to is evaluating everything about you. It’s not just your words or some ad you wrote that they responded to. It’s the way you carry yourself, the inflection in your voice, the kindness and caring (or lack of it), the self-confidence, every last element.

So it’s critical that you take an inventory of all those factors that go into the message you put out to people. And then you should work to improve each factor and relate each factor to that “mentor with a servant’s heart.”

Many people over the years have said, “That’s what attracted me to you - that ‘mentor with a servant’s heart.’” And that is perfect, because THAT is exactly the best person to work with in an MLM business.

You need to be picky about the people you will actually spend your time working with. The better you are at putting out that message you want to get across to people, the sharper that message is, the more focused you are on that exact message, the better chance you have of connecting with other “mentors with a servant’s heart”, and THOSE are the people who will really build your business.

The fact is, a lot of the questions people have can just be directed back at that theme. “Be a mentor with a servant’s heart” hits a chord with people. You’re just here to help, just here to inform, to educate … people are attracted to that. It has to come from the heart. You have to mean it. And your best MLM prospects fall in love with that phrase.

A Lot of People Go Into Network Marketing Strictly For The Money

Bottom line dollars are all they focus on, and they’re not shy about it. The first few times I tried network marketing, way back when, it was all about the money.

And boy, it sure never worked! There were no piles of dough at the end of THAT rainbow. Have YOU ever had that experience?

So you have two sides: The Money v. The Mentor with a Servant’s Heart. Which one can you really get behind? Which one can you put all your emotion behind? Which one inspires you? Which one can motivate you and keep you going and provide a big part of your “WHY”, the reason you do this business?

It’s never going to come down to the money. The money is never going to do it for you. It’s got to be more than the money, or you will quit. Network marketing is a tough business. You will have many, many, many opportunities to give up and quit. You need a strong, strong reason to stay in the game. Plain old money - no matter how much - will never be strong enough for you.

But being able to help people and see that you are making a difference in their life? THAT is the reason that has the chance to be huge for you.

Plus - It’s WAY More Duplicatable!

People can see themselves just reaching out and creating relationships and helping others. For most people, that is IN them. That’s something they’re comfortable with. Most of us like to help others, we want to be of service, which is why your MLM prospects can see themselves doing it.

But when you’re focused on the money, you’re ALWAYS thinking about it. It’s ALWAYS there. “Is this person going to join my business? What will my paycheck be? How much will I make when their friends & family join?”

When you’re focused on the money, your mind is going in the wrong direction for you to be at your best. You get afraid of losing the money. When you talk to your prospect, all you see are those dollar signs.

But when you’re focused on just helping them, being that mentor with the servant’s heart, all those problems go away.

When you have no agenda except to help the person, you can feel good and pure, with no worries that they’ll figure out your ulterior motive. Money? Not an issue. Your focus is educating and mentoring. And when you do that, the money will follow.

Now … you need to know that there was a LONG time in my life that I would have read what I’ve written here and thought, “Oh, brother. Total BS. What a pansy THAT guy is!”

Maybe it’s just maturing, I don’t know. What I do know is, I get excited about helping other people. I am not that personality who is driven to help people … but even so, it feels really good to do it. When I know I’ve made a difference in someone’s life, it’s a very fulfilling feeling.

When you talk with a prospect, everything you say, every question they ask … it can all be related back to that theme of “mentor with a servant’s heart.” If that phrase doesn’t resonate with the person you’re talking with, then you’re going to have a pretty short talk - which is fine.

And if you focus on the theme of “mentor with a servant’s heart”, your prospects realize you really have a plan for network marketing success. They can hear in your voice that you really know what you’re doing. Your entire Action Plan just falls in place. When you relate everything back to being a mentor with a servant’s heart, you give yourself a much more professional manner than most network marketers have.

You Take The Hype Away

You take the pressure away. Everybody relaxes and takes a deep breath, and everything gets cleared up. It can surprise people. You hear them sometimes say, “Well, I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

And you can tell them, “Hey, that’s OK. I understand. You got a pretty good wait coming up.”

It’s a much more natural way to do business. Take it back to a brick and mortar store, one of these little boutiques that makes commission on the different knick-knacks they sell. You go in there and they’re all over you, telling you what would fit your personality, what you absolutely must have, blah, blah, blah.

They’re being nice, but you know there’s an ulterior motive, so you don’t trust them. You might even like them, but you’d never be friends with them.

It’s pretty standard to get that same feeling from someone in network marketing who calls you up to get you in their deal. But that’s totally taken away when you are that mentor with the servant’s heart. It’s a completely different relationship … it’s professional. That’s what resonates with so many people.

The alternative is, you got the cowboy out there trying to herd the cow into one little cell in the stockyard. You ask questions to get that cow to go where you want, you say things to the cow to get it to go where you want, and the cow knows exactly what you are doing, and the LAST thing it’ll do is go where you want it to.

We’ve all been in that position, with someone asking those questions designed to get you to give one certain answer. We have all heard those questions. So When you don’t come in with that agenda, they know that, too.

There was a famous sales trainer many years ago by the name of Tom Hopkins. He taught this “herding” technique as state-of-the-art sales training at that time. You ask questions where the person can only answer yes, or they look like an idiot. And when you manipulate people like that, you wind up with people who resent you, people who don’t ever want to see you again.

But if you are that mentor with a servant’s heart, it does not matter what they answer. You ask questions because you need to know how to help them best. There is no right or wrong answer. Ideally, you’d like to find someone who is also that mentor with a servant’s heart. That is the best person for you to work with in network marketing. So you ask about the person and their background to find out if you have a match.

In the best network marketing system, you target your best prospects by being that “mentor with a servant’s heart.” And since you actually want to help them, since you’re not that cowboy, herding them into a corner, you have a chance to connect with them on a personal level and build a relationship. And when you do that, THAT person is the one who will build your business and your income.
