Can Nice Women Succeed In Direct Sales - Network Marketing?

Posted on February 29, 2008 - Filed Under Health and Fitness, Home Based Business |

The biggest perceived barrier to growing a large team in direct sales / network marketing is…

“Nice Woman” syndrome.

What was my definition of a “nice woman” you ask? For me, it meant good manners, some what soft spoken, not pushy, not aggressive - in fact, a well brought up southern girl. And yes, I even have the accent :-)

Every time I’d seen or heard of a women who succeeded in an mlm company, my impression was of a fairly ruthless empire builder. Doesn’t take no for an answer - loves to “close” the deal - overrides objections and blazes a path to the top of the heap.

And I’d think to myself - that’s just not me. That’s not now I operate. I don’t want to “close” a deal or override someone’s probably very valid objections. In fact, I didn’t want to be a ruthless empire builder. And you know how I know this? I tried that route - and failed. I not only failed, I failed miserably. I felt really bad about the pressure I put on people to get involved. The words “you’ll make the cost of the start up back within weeks” would stick in my mouth. The pitch “this is a great opportunity and you’d be foolish to pass it up” would come out sounding week and unconvincing - because it was.

So, I thought I was doomed to failure in multi level marketing. Because, let’s face it, the real money is in the residual income you receive from building your team. Oh, I’d do fine when it would come to selling the product - my “nice southern girl” personality is great for building trust with my customers - and with trust comes sales. But never the residual income that everyone dreams about.

And then, not very long ago, it hit me. I was going about this the wrong way. I don’t think you can be truly successful if your build you business in a way that makes you uncomfortable. My rise may not be meteoric - but I will rise to the top knowing that I had been true to myself.

My epiphany happened recently. I had someone I had tried to sponsor call me out of the blue and tell me she was ready to sign up. I hadn’t spoken with her in over a year. And she said to me “you were so helpful when we first talked. You didn’t pressure me into signing up and you’ve answered questions over and over again even when I made it clear I wasn’t joining your team at the time. “ After I welcomed her aboard and made plans to train her, it dawned on me. I had spoken with her before I’d started to read all the mlm books on recruiting - before I’d tried to use the heavy hitter tactics of the “successful” mlm recruiters.

I had, in fact, sponsored her - not recruited her. And I know that once she’s trained and comfortable with the products, she’ll be an incredible team member. She’s committed, confident and secure in her decision to join my team.

And I’d rather have one of her than 10 recruits.

Will this slow my rise to the top? Maybe. But I won’t have any regrets. And, if you choose to take this route, neither should you.
