Every day my inbox is bombarded by network marketers trying to get me to join their opportunity. They mainly waste their time raving about how fantastic their product is.
So is your product the main attraction to your business?
Well, just to be confusing, the answer is Yes and No!
Lets begin with the “Yes” portion. In my company 75% of our associates were product consumers before they joined us to become associates. I have an inkling that most of them became associates so they could get the product at a discount. Which I suppose is fair enough, as they were already using they product from day to day. Many never joined the company with any intention to GROW a business. When you put time and effort into getting new associates, you want them to be business builders.

A few days ago, I was replying some comments on my MLM blog when I came across a great question from Marti. She asked:
“I have only been involved in internet marketing for the past two months. How do I create value when I haven’t built a downline yet. I don’t think my friends and family would be interested. - Regards Marti”
I can really relate to this question. When I first started out in network marketing, I didn’t want to have to bug my friends and family. So I opted to work in what we call the “cold market” in MLM.

When I was first introduced to network marketing, I was fired up and ready to go. I got carried away and imagined that everyone I approached would share my enthusiasm. I was brought back down to Earth pretty quickly, that’s for sure!
I found that people were overly apprehensive of MLM businesses. I heard the same concerns over and over:
- It sounds too good to be true.
- It’s a pyramid scheme!
- Those programs don’t work. They’re all scams!

It happens all too often. Enthusiastically, you round up the names of people you think may be interested in your business opportunity. You agree with your sponsor to start working down the list to make your pitch. So you pick up the phone and call the first person on the list. All you get is “No thanks,” and they hang up. There’s 100 more names on the list, so onto the next person. They scoff, “You’re wasting your time and mine, buddy, get a real job.” Not what you expected, maybe the next person will give you a break.
